» Mike Atkin competed in the Executive (50+ years old) division because there was no one in the Directors (40+ years old). What did you think would happen?
Jon "Devastator" Delbrugge made his first appearance in the Intermediate No-Gi division. He used his strong wrestling and quickly-improving submission skills to maximum effect; his first two opponents were put on their backs and stuck defending from the turtle. Only one did as Devastor submitted his first opponent with a Matt Hughes choke. In the finals, Devastator was put on his back off a takedown attempt. With seconds ticking away, he turned to his knees to try to escape. For a second, it looked like he would escape but his opponent managed to lock on an armbar as he fell off our teammate's back. A solid performance that highlights how frightening Devastator will be once he masters our passing and submission systems!
CJ "Never Back Down" Melton competed for the first time this weekend. N.B.D. came in prepared with a solid gameplan and good conditioning (he will happily tell you of the instances he has thrown up after conditioning practices). He submitted his first adversary with an armbar from the guard and outpointed opponents #2 and #3 to make the finals. The semi-final match was extremely close, with N.B.D. falling back on points from a guillotine attempts (silly NAGA rules) but forcing overtime with a late guard pass. In overtime, it was clear who had better conditoning, and the Crazy 88 BJJ member easily won it. Although he lost to a wrestler in the Championship bout, N.B.D. fought hard the whole time and shows great promise for the future.
"#1 Stunna" keeps improving with every performance. He submitted 3 opponents (kimura, kneebar, rear choke) to nab a Bronze in the Intermediate No-Gi. Stunna is looking for submission every match and it cost him a finals berth as he was winning dominantly on points in the Semis but kept pushing for the tap (and ended up getting caught himself). Stunna kept up the same intensity in the Gi division where he crushed three opponents to win the samurai sword. He kept up a blistering pace and one by one, his opponents crumpled. Remember that this kid is only 17 years old! His parents still drop him off and pick him up from practice!
Despite the horrors of the drive up and back home, we performed well even with such a small squad.

» On Saturday, the Crazy 88 Kids team traveled down to Richmond, VA for the US Grappling tournament, which always brings out the best kids from the Virginia and North Carolina area.
First up was Brendan Bill, In the No-Gi division he went 2-1, losing a tough match in the finals. Prior to the finals, he outscored his two opponents 36-0! Brendan has been working very hard and it showed as he was able to execute a number of high level skills. In the Gi, division Brendan beat 3 very tough opponents including the kid that stopped him in the No-Gi finals! Brendan walked away with the his first Gold Medal and a big smile. Brendan is the first child to win 1st for 88BJJ, so when you see him tell him "Way to go!"
Next up was Madeline "Judo Coach" Donnelly. Madeline won her first match, which was very exciting, by a score of 12-8 but unfortunately she injured her arm in the match. Madeline, showing a lot of heart, stepped out there for the finals and did her best but mid-way through the match her arm was hurting too much and Mr. Danny stopped the match (safety is priority #1 when it comes to children). She walked away with the Silver medal in the No-Gi <80 lbs weight class and the respect of everyone in attendance for giving it her all!
Seth Fillers did well in the No-Gi, placing third. Everyone knows how strong Seth is and boy did he show it! Using a lot of lifts and driving double legs, Seth was fun to watch. Seth also ended up taking 4th in the Gi division. Seth had a great showing for his first tournament and his hair was also a big highlight as he was sporting what Mr. Danny called a "cornrullet". A Bronze medal goes to Seth. Awesome job!
Fard Muhammad didn't place in the No-Gi weight class; he lost in the first round to the competitor that won the whole division. For the Gi bracket, Mr. Danny gave Fard a new strategy that would give him a chance use his best techniques and use his amazing strength. It paid off as Fard was able to redeem himself against the very child that had beat him earlier in the day. He then beat another kid 8-0. Fard was able to use his snapdown and high single-leg attacks throughout all his matches. Fard ended up losing on points in the finals 13-9 in what was one of the best kids matches we've ever seen! So a Silver medal goes to the very tough Fard.
Congrats to all the kids that stepped out there and competed with class! You make everyone proud!

» Roberto Torralbas kicked off the whole tournament in the purple belt division on the third mat. He dominated and controlled his first match, finishing with a bread cutter choke. In close semi-final battle, he came out on top 4-2. Proving again the importance of advantages, Roberto won the gold medal by defeating his opponent with 2 advantages to 0.
