November 17, 2006Thanks to Dan Rothman & Ryan Hall » A sincere Thank You to Ryan Hall and Dan Rothman who taught class today. Ryan went over the flying triangle and added a lot of little details that make this "flashy" move a lot more accessible. Dan then showed some variations of the tight 1/2-guard pass which focused on maintaining heavy pressure. It was a great class for all involved.

Age Skill Weight Result Scott Miller Teens Beginner No-Gi --- 2nd Expert No-Gi --- 3rd Beginner Gi --- 3rd Sean Miller Kids Intermediate No-Gi Lightweight (<99 lbs) 2nd Stephen Miller Kids Beginner No-Gi Lightweight (<59 lbs) 2nd
» "Little" Scott placed in three divisions despite fighting in all three AT THE SAME TIME. He fought in five consecutive matches with only a single 30-second break. In the Teens No-Gi Beginner, he won his first match 7-4 but would lose a 0-0 match in the finals. He then put his gi on and defeated his 1st opponent 2-0 before coming up short on points. After jumping into a 3rd division without rest, Scott was awarded an additional 1st place award for his valiant effort and toughness! .
Sean is a 13 year-old who has been grappling with the family. He bumped up a weight class to get matches and still took care of two other kids - finishing the first in 8 seconds with an arm triangle and the second with a guillotine. In the championship bout, he fought hard, losing by only 2 points in an action-packed match (score was 16-14)!
After an impromptu lesson in submissions from big brother, Stephen decided to compete despite having no experience. It must've been a good lesson because he tapped his first two opponents!

August 26-27, 2006Mike Atkin is World Champion
» Well, the title says it all.
Mike should have competed at Senior 4 which is for grapplers between age 51-55. Unfortunately, Mike would get only one match in that age division. The situation at Senior 3 was the same - only one match! Rather than settle for an "easy" Gold, Mike exhibited his competitive spirit when he decided to drop down to Senior 2 in order to get more matches. His opponents would be 41-45 years old, almost a decade younger than Mike.

Age Skill Weight Result Amie Turton Adult Blue Belt Pluma (<118 lbs) 2nd
» Amie Turton defeated Davina Maciel (Carioca Team), last weeks World Cup winner, in the 1st round 4-0. This was a big mental jump for Amie as Maciel had defeated her in last week's final. Amie then faced a tough girl from Sao Paulo in the semi-finals. Amie handily defeated her 6-0 by taking her back and sweeping her. In the finals, Amie's opponent scored an early advantage and held Amie down from the top of 1/2-guard to win a 0-0 victory.
A frustrating final match but Amie still brought back a World Championship Medal!

» The World Cup (Copa do Mundo) takes place a week before the World Championships (Mundial) and brings in a lot of competitors looking to get some good matches before the following week. Amie competed in the Pluma Blue Belt division, taking second.
Amie defeated Yasmin Sewgobina from Yamasaki Holland by points in her first match before losing on points in the finals. Davina Maciel, an MMA fighter from Amazon, took the gold. Although there were only four girls in the division, it was a taste of the competition level in Brazil and a good warmup for next weekend's bigger competition.

The gauntlet started off with the white belts, and moved up belt by belt. February 4, 2006Dallas Winters Wars 4 Results
Age Skill Weight Result Julius Park Adult Purple Belt Middleweight (<181* lbs) 1st
» Julius brought home a 1st place trophy, defeating three opponents at Carlos Machado's Winter Wars tournament in Dallas, Texas. In the quarterfinals. he lifted his opponent from the 1/2-guard, spun underneath, and submitted him in 12 seconds with a kneebar. The semifinals against a grappler from Corkran Academy of BJJ started off slower with Julius working the gripping systems and negating his opponent's takedown attempts. Julius scored first with a takedown and then repeatedly forced his opponent to turn to his knees with his pass attempts. As his opponent turned, Julius set up a flying triangle (a special thanks to Ryan Hall for his triangle seminar last Tuesday). The triangle was tight but his opponent was not willing to tap and managed to squirm out. Julius added two more sweeps to the score and won 6-0. The final match was against a very strong grappler from William Vandry's academy. Julius slid behind him and tried to take his back but his opponent reacted quickly and only gave up two points for the sweep. The rest of the match was Julius trying to pass and his opponent trying to sweep. With a few seconds left, Julius managed to completely clear his opponent's legs and was forcing his opponent to his back but time ran out before points could be called.
A good start to the 2006 season!

January 28, 2006NAGA US Nationals Results
Age Skill Weight Result Amie Turton Adult Advanced Lightweight (<135 lbs) 1st Blue Belt Lightweight (<130 lbs) 2nd Blue Belt Middleweight (130+ lbs) 2nd
» Amie started the new year off with a bang, heading to Florida and bringing back three medals!
Amie started the day off winning her no-gi division dominantly. She would face the same opponents in the lightweight blue belt division. Unfortunately, in the finals, her previously-beaten opponent accidently kneed Amie in the face during a takedown attempt. Amie was unable to continue and her opponent was declared the winner. Amie wasn't finished though....
The best woman grappler in the world, Juliana Borges was at the tournament and could not find any opponents. Juliana is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and is the current Abu Dhabi submission wrestling champion in both her weight class and the Absolute. Amie jumped at the opportunity to compete against world-level competition and jumped into Juliana's division. Despite being outweighed and facing a black belt, Amie took Juliana the distance, losing on points. Much respect to Amie for a gutsy performance!

December 3, 2005Leo Dalla In-House Tournament a Success!
» Leo Dalla's 1st In-House tournament was a great success with athletes coming from Lloyd Irvin's, Evolve, Leo Dalla's, and Jeff Ruth's academies. From our place, Don Walter represented the Academy well, submitting his first opponent and having some close point battles with the other competitors.
In-house tournaments are a great way to get some "friendly" competition experience. Leo plans to have 2-3 of these types of tournaments next year so take advantage of them; you'll be amazed at how much you can learn from getting in there, win or lose.

November 12, 2005VABJJF Results
Age Skill Weight Result Julius Park Adult Purple Belt Lightweight (<161 lbs) 1st Amie Turton Adult Blue Belt Lightweight (<130 lbs) 2nd Blue Belt Open 1st
» Two More Golds for the School, this time by Amie and Julius.
In the finals of the women's blue belt division, Amie lost a 0-0 (1-1) decision to a very tough girl from Yamasaki Academy. We discussed the match and came up with some new tactics for the Absolute (no weight limit) division. Amie defeated her first opponent in the Absolute by a large number of points and earned a rematch with the girl who had beaten her in the weight class. Armed a new strategy, Amie took the match 11-0. She walked away with a new gi and a $100 gift certificate for winning the Absolute! One of the reasons we stress "smart" Jiu-Jitsu at 88 BJJ is for situations like these - a different gameplan can be the difference between a loss and a dominating win!
Julius had a bye into the finals where he armbarred his opponent in about 4 minutes to win his division. Team Lloyd Irvin had an amazing performance this weekend. We won three out of five Absolute divisions (women's, blue, brown) and had a silver in one other (white). It was very encouraging to see so many new students out there competing for the first time.

» Another successful weekend for the team! Amie Turton won two divisions (no surprise there!), only having 1 point scored on her in four matches. Roberto Torralbas, an old friend from the Cornell University BJJ club, brought home two medals himself in his second-ever jiu-jitsu tournament! We appreciate him repping our team while he's in the area. Much respect to Montanha (Gracie Miami) and Trevor Rivers (Cornell BJJ), his primary trainers for doing such an excellent job. Congratulations to Amie, Roberto, and Don and Brennan Walter for putting it on the line this weekend. Win or lose, you make us proud!

» BIG THANKS to Phil Proctor for coming in on Saturday and working with the team members who were not competing! The results speak for themselves:
When no one showed up for her weight class, Amie Turton entered the heavier weight category and submitted all three of her opponents. Everyone who has been in class knows that Mike was unable to train the whole week due to an injury he sustained at the Grapplers Quest. Mike, fighting with one arm, managed to bring home a gold and lost only by advantage in the finals of the gi. We are very proud of their competitive spirit and never-say-die attitude. Congratulations!

- June 11, 2005Amie Conquers the Florida Pro-Am
Age Skill Weight Result Amie Turton Adult Advanced No-Gi Lightweight (<135 lbs) 1st Blue Belt & Above Lightweight (<135 lbs) 1st
» This weekend at the Florida Pro-Am of Grappling, 88 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu's Amie Turton brought home two GOLD medals. In case you don't know her, Amie is one of the top teen grapplers in the United States. She recently took SILVER at the Pan-American Championships and showed that her medal was no fluke with another dominating performance last weekend. Amie competed in the Adult Women's Lightweight division (135 lbs and below) and won her two matches 6x0 and 6x2. She then entered the Women's Blue Belt division (135 lbs and under) and dominated her opponents there, 10x0 and 6x0. What makes her performance more extraordinary is the fact that not only is she competing against grown women but she weighs in at almost 20 lbs less than the weight limit!

Age Skill Weight Result Mike Atkin Executive Advanced No-Gi Open 1st
» Just one week after opening, 88 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu scored its first championship... A BIG congratulations goes out to "Iron" Mike Atkin who drove down south for NAGA's 3rd Annual Georgia Grappling Championship. Mike competed in the Executive division and defeated his finals opponent 6-0. He then went on to compete in the Advanced 189.9 lbs division and lost a close match 4-2. Much respect to Mike for not being content with one GOLD medal but stepping up and competing in his first advanced division despite being 50 years old. Look for Mike to continue his winning ways at this weekend's Grapplers Quest tournament.
